Frequently Asked Questions About Our Worship
Who may attend worship services?
Everyone is welcome! You will find a caring group of people at St. Matthew. We come from all backgrounds and all walks of life. You will fit in just fine.
What is the worship service like?
God is a majestic and awesome God who is the great King of all. In our worship service we want to approach him in reverence, awe, and humility giving him the glory he rightly deserves. But at the same time we want to approach him with joy and celebration – he is our Savior! Our service is carefully planned, and it’s printed out, so that you will always know what is coming next. Every worship service follows a Biblical theme for that day. The songs we sing and the portions of the Bible that we read are selected to center on that theme. We have the opportunity in our worship to listen to God speak to us through his Word, and we have the opportunity to respond to him through our praises, prayers, and songs.
What is the sermon going to be like?
The sermons are based solely on God’s unchanging Word, which has relevant and personal things to say to all people in the 21st century. The sermons are designed to relate the truths of God’s saving, life-giving Word to you in a clear way. It is our goal that the sermon relates God’s timeless truths to the challenges you are faced with in your life today. It is our goal that the sermon reinforces things you already knew, teaches you something you don’t know, and leaves you with the peace and assurance of God’s great love and complete forgiveness in Christ Jesus.
How long is the worship service?
A typical worship service last about an hour.
Are you going to call attention to me as a visitor?
No! We want you to feel welcome, and we won’t single you out, put you on the spot, or make you feel uncomfortable. You won’t be asked to stand up and introduce yourself. But we hope that you are warmly greeted and made to feel welcome by the friendly folks at St. Matthew’s.
How much is it going to cost me?
That’s an important question since many people believe, “All the church wants is my money!” Nothing could be further from the truth. While we do take an offering at every one of our worship services as part of our response of love and thanks to God (just as our prayers, songs and praises are part of our response of love and thanks to God), that offering is completely voluntary. You don’t have to participate at all, if you don’t want to. When the offering plate comes by, you may simply pass it along. No one will think badly of you or look down on you. Our real goal is to give something to you – the message and peace of God’s love and forgiveness, not to take something away from you.
